Labels and Back to School

BACK TO SCHOOL READY

How did the summer go so quickly and do we really need to look at the calendar or do we just look outside?  Have you noticed the nights are getting darker earlier, the leaves are starting to turn – ssshhhh.  Yep Fall is upon us and with Fall and “Back to School” for the kids.  It could be said back to school for the Mom’s too!

I was at a local department store yesterday and saw a lot of Mom’s (and Dad’s) with kids crowding the hallways looking around.  Certainly the isle which hosts the new binders, paper and sparkly pens was busy.  It was almost like Christmas with the hustle and bustle.  Are you ready Mom’s and Dad’s so many things to think about as that first day of school approaches.  You have the new first day of school outfit, the supply list for the school supplies (don’t forget the labels).  Labels yes they are a great item when you spending so much of your hard-earned monies only to find out your child returns home without his new hat, coat or shoes on.  How does a child lose a shoe?  I don’t know about that one, but I have seen shoes in the lost in found.

I am heading out today for a trip to the water – yes it is a little drizzly and not the sunniest but we are going to squeeze in every last bit of summer holidays there is.  I hope you and your family have had some time to enjoy a little slower pace this summer and are going to find some more sand and surf days to just enjoy each other’s company before the new season ramps up the lives for many of us parents.

Label me FIVE years old!

April 21, 2015 by nancy 2 Comments

SO THIS IS WHAT FIVE LOOKS LIKE

My baby boy turned five today!  How does it happen? I am sure these words resonate with you if you are a parent.

I had the luxury of putting my little four-year old boy to bed last night and we snuggled together for a while and he fell asleep in my arms.  I must admit I fell asleep too, it had been a long day.  But before we nodded off, we had a little chat about how things would be different tomorrow when he turned 5.

We both agreed he would be stronger, faster, smarter and more handsome.  I kissed him and told him goodnight and woke up this morning with him calling for mommy or daddy.  Of course Mommy was the first one up, he needed a little snuggle because he had a bad dream.  We looked at each other and he did look a little bit stronger, faster, smarter and probably more handsome too!

A few of Noah’s favorite things:

Bologna

Buns

Cars and trucks

Playing with his big sister Meaghan

Giggling

Saying “chicken-butt”

Making Funny sounds with his nose

Scared of the dark

Loves scary movies

Rides his bike very fast, and doesn’t think he needs his training wheels

Awesome hockey, soccer player dude

Loves his family and his new friends at JK

Love you forever and ever Noah – now you are officially in your 6th year.  My wish for you is to do all the things you love and more this brand new year ahead.  I know I will watch you grow and grow to more handsome, smarter, and stronger every day and every year!  SLOW DOWN…..

Labels for all seasons

April 6, 2015 by nancy Leave a Comment

untitled (6)

We live in a climate which we have the luxury of the 4 seasons.  Being that it is early April we need to be prepared for all the elements it seems in one day.  The other day we drove home from a visit with family members in the middle of a snowstorm.  Earlier in the day it was sunny and dare I say a little warm – a high of 2.

I chuckle to myself as I was reminded of a young girl walking by as I was playing with my kids at the park.  I mentioned to my Dad who was with me,  “look she is wearing a sleeveless top and shorts!”  We both laughed and said she must be a Canadian!  The first sign of warmth and sun and we are singing happy thoughts and shedding the layers.    It was one of the coldest February’s we had on record, even in Florida.  I had the opportunity to go South this winter and yes I had to even bundle up then.  I had picked one of the weeks Florida had a cold snap.  They weather channel had warned its residents to bundle up, and bundle they did.  They had on their winter wool coats, hats and gloves, even their dogs had their coats on too.    Of course I walked past them in my shorts, and short sleeve top.  They would nod and wink, and most likely thought …….”Oh my she must be Canadian!”

What will the kid’s wear tomorrow on the bus?  Will it be snow-pants with shorts underneath?  I am not sure yet, but what I do know for sure is they will have a label on them!  I will leave you with this beautiful poem by Robert Frost which best sums up my thoughts.

“The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day.
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You’re one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
a cloud come over the sunlit arch,
And wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you’re two months back in the middle of March”
–  Robert Frost, Two Tramps in Mud Time, 1926

Circle of Life

March 8, 2015 by nancy Leave a Comment

 342ed69ac85297524743bbc83c676f4a

Nothing is permanent in this lifetime.  Life is so fragile – I attended a drop in memorial for a women in the community who has 2 children the same age as me.  Her husband,  41 years old in good physical shape had apparently went for a jog.  His wife came home and found him on their door step.  My thoughts have been with this family all week.  My friend told me this week her father had 3 months to live.  Another close friend who has been battling breast cancer  is having her last radiation treatment.  My beautiful friend and her family are moving to Germany this week to start a new life.  My daughter and I will miss them terribly as they have become such good friends.

I am not good at goodbyes.   I am not sure anyone is?  Maybe some people fake it better than others?   This letting go process is complicated for me, I am not good at it.

We are hopefully coming to a completion of the long dark winter months with the spring forward motion of the clocks comes new beginnings and new life cycles.   With that comes hope, light and maybe some faith!

It is my Birthday today I get to blow out another candle.  Birthday ‘s have a funny way of grabbing your attention on the aging process, I have been feeling the aches and pains of the process, but it is a real blessing to become yet another year older.

Like the butterfly in the picture, there is a cycle to life.  Like the seasons, there is a time for everything.

We are heading out for a little family dinner, what a gift and I get to come home and eat more chocolate cake and hear my family sing “Happy Birthday”!  It has been a really good day.

Enjoy the sun!

UNPLUGGED for the WEEK!

October 24, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

images[7]

Could you unplug from your technology for a week. I did (almost) and I really enjoyed it! I travelled recently the Dominican Republic with a girlfriend and had so much fun.  Observing everyone on their devices I wondered what was so important that they had to have their phones with them at all times.  Maybe I did miss my camera feature I have grown fond of or checking my Facebook updates.  Ok maybe checking my email updates every hour.  But I did none of the above for a week and it was freeing.  I must admit I am addicted like many other to my phone and I don’t like that I am so dependant on my phone.  I could never understand those people walking across the road checking their phones.  Were they not afraid of getting hit by a car of walking into oncoming traffic.  We are always looking down.  What have we become as a society.  Am I one of those people.

It began before I left, I was having problems with my cell phone. I spilled water on my new cell phone (my first ever fancy phone ever)… I am slow to catch on to technology.   My replacement phone we bought off kijji – does not connect to the WiFi properly, it seems I am using a lot of data.  Needless to say I was hesitant to bring my phone to the Caribbean, as I did not want to incur hundreds of dollars on roaming charges.  I could not connect and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise!

 tropical-beach-Dominican-Republic-Wallpapers-HD

What a freedom not to be connected to the outside world. Away from emails, phones, Facebook. Just me, the ocean and my book. Thanks to the person who decided to borrow my book I left on my lounges the first day, (I guess you really wanted to read it). Well I am happy to report that was the worse thing that happened on my trip. I have a horror story of travelling to the Caribbean with a girlfriend, (I will save that for another time).

My friend who I travelled with had her cell phone, as she needed it for business.  I must admit I borrowed her phone to make a quick phone call to the family to let them know I was having a great time and see them when I get home.  I was a little teary talking to the kids and missing them so I made it short and sweet.

A week away from my responsibilities of everyday – just what the Doctor ordered, a little Vitamin D and a dose of freedom. Ahhhh the power of the sun and the water, it is so healing for the soul. I haven’t been away for a while and so enjoyed my every moment. We stayed at a beautiful 5 star, all-inclusive resort, need I say more.

So many memories, we danced till the wee hours one night and jumped fully clothed into the pool to cool off. I won the blackjack tournament by the pool and had to spend yet another night at the casino and walked out with cash in my pocket woot – woot!

I watched a whole family one night in the lobby one night – all had their heads down and all were on their cell phones. I watched them for several hours while my girlfriend and I played the coolest ever board-game and the poor mother (who was the only one who didn’t have a phone) was left to socialize on her own. I think if I were her I would have got up and left. Watching another couple, I saw her on her I-pad and the man like the other women was left alone. What has this world come to…..

I say I was disconnected (almost) – I snuck a look at the Lobby Internet several times, catching up on world events. My favorite event was lying on my lounger by the ocean, listening to the waves while my toes were touching the sand.

I challenge you on your next week away to unplug from the world and feel the freedom of your senses. I recently heard on the news as I was driving the other day. The number one cause of accidents – is people being distracted while driving. It is more prevalent than drunk driving.

Turn those phones off – pay attention – be present!

YEP…. let’s treat him for LYME DISEASE … that is a TICK BITE!

August 15, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

10561768_10152224080220919_6909389622403548925_n

No parent wants to hear “Ok lets treat him for LYME DISEASE – yes that looks like a TICK Bite!”  My son came home the other day and I noticed he had a bite mark on his leg after I gave him his bath.  Putting him to bed I asked him if something bit him and he thought something had.  The next day my husband said “Ok we are taking him to the Clinic to get checked”.  I was a little nervous and had a knot in my stomach as I had a sneaking suspicion he may have had a tick bite, as the pictures I saw online looked very similar and we are exposed to high risk areas where we vacation.

Upon inspecting his upper thigh where he had this rash the Doctor kinda of cringed when he saw it and began asking us if we where in an area recently where there is a high risk of ticks.  Sadly we had to answer yes.  We boat in an area in Lake Erie where there are signs posted in Turkey Point & Long Point.  Risk of Lyme Disease due to Tick Bites.  I quiver every time we drive by these signs and think how terrible it would be to be in contact with these creatures.  I remember watching a documentary years ago about how a women became very ill and could not be diagnosed as to what was causing her failing health and it was undetected Lyme Disease as in some cases it can be very tricky to diagnose.

Noah is taking penicillin antibiotics for 3 weeks (3 times a day).  The doctor suggested any other symptoms appearing (fever, muscle ache, joint stiffness to name a few) take him to the hospital immediately.  He said he is to be reassessed by his family doctor in 3 weeks.

One scary fact which we didn’t know is the rash (bullseye is the term), doesn’t always appear immediately, it can take up to 1 month to appear.  This is the case with Noah we where not at the boat for several weeks, so it probably took him a couple of weeks to appear on his body.  The doctor said to check kids full body after playing in areas where there is high risk of exposure to ticks.

My “Mom Tip” is to seek immediate attention if they develop any type of rash in the next month after possible exposure.  I guess we have to go thru these things as Mom’s to help educate other parents along the way.

 Lyme disease

Medical Specialties: Cardiology, Neurology

Clinical Definition

Lyme disease is a vector-driven infectious disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium from the bite of a tick. The majority of cases present with acute signs and symptoms as the body mounts an immune response, including the hallmark erythema migrans rash (it looks like a target) which occurs within one month of the bite. Bacteria spread throughout the body via the lymphatic system, which gives rise to varied, systemic symptoms.

In Our Own Words

A bull’s eye rash is the hallmark sign of Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria from a tick bite. While the majority of patients (as many as 80 percent) exhibit this classic rash, some do not. Many experience flu-like symptoms, fatigue or painful, swollen joints, but some do not. The disease (first traced and publicized in Lyme, Conn.), can cause nerve, heart and joint problems, especially if it goes untreated. Symptoms from Lyme disease may continue for months or even years in some cases. Awareness and early treatment are crucial.

I am sure Mr. Noah will be just fine, as he is being treated and not showing any other symptoms.  One positive note to share with parents who may be scared of this happening to them.  I read that is highly unlikely alot of ticks carry the disease, so the chances of developing the disease are slim.   OK – “you people who wrote that better be right!”

My Noah is a very active, (did I mention very active), 4 year old ready to start taking the school bus to Kindergarten in a few weeks with Big Sis!  Stay tuned for his Kindergarten and  Back to School adventures………..

WOW – August already, with less than a month to go before school. How did it go so quickly? I think this is on everyone’s minds this time of year. Yes it is still nice and sunny but I gotta tell you my plants aren’t looking as fresh as they did at the start of the season – maybe it is just my lack of plant maintenance? Or is it just that time of year! Most nights now you need a sweater, or is just me always chilly. Probably just MOI!

Back to school supplies, yes they are everywhere you go these days. Stopping into the drugstore see all those new pencils just glistening next to the sale priced flip-flops and suntan lotion. So if you are a new Mom sending your kids back to school or a veteran would are you stocking up on this year. Here is a little list to get you started. I think I still have the .29 lined paper left from last year! I always buy 10 or more, and feel like I too am heading back!

Who Doesn’t Like A Fruit Kabob?

June 18, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

Want to be the “Hit of the Party?”  Come on ….. who doesn’t want to feel like Martha Stewart some of the time!  Taking these crowd pleasers  to the party they ask “Did you make these?”  You can proudly answer “Yes I did”. What is so hard about a fruit kabob you ask? It is so simply – it is easy peazy!

Having the all the ingredients is key. Browsing the grocery store this week I eyed those wooden skewers sitting on the shelf. They seemed to jump into the cart without a second glance. With all of the fruit in season, it is smooth sailing.

Ingredients:  Strawberries, Kiwi, Grapes, Oranges, & Wooden Skewers (use any of your favorite fruits)

(You could jazz it up with 2 Bonus Items) Cheese Cubes & Fruit Dip!

How do you do it?

Wash and cut all fruit – remember to keep them chunky for the sticks. Start sticking – being careful to slide them on slowly.  Cut the wooden sticks in half if you want a smaller version or if they fit on your platter nicer.   Remember Kiddies love to help in the kitchen. This is a great little project to do with the kiddies when you are attending your family or friend party  this summer!

84843

Fruit Dip Recipe: 8 oz. Creme Cheese 1/2 Cup marshmallow creme 2 Cups Frozen Whipped Topping 1/4 Unsweetened Pineapple Juice

(Mixy – Mixy and you are done.  Chill for 1 hour and arrange the skewers on a fancy platter with your dip in the middle).

Chillax  –  SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE – Martha would be proud!

We all need a “Pretty Ribbon!”

June 1, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

23a1f53b30eebadb568b80b959215d0e

Do you remember your “Track & Field” Day at school when you were young? My best memories were of the celebrations at the end of the day with popsicle in hand.  I guess I wasn’t much of an athlete when my memories are of popsicle’s and not the actual events.  I do remember the high jumping, that darn bar!  It always kind of scared the heck of me.  Oh those ribbons they were always such a big part of the day.  So many colours and they would be worn proudly on our shirts.

What happens to the child who doesn’t receive a ribbon?  And all of her classmates, or all of your school it seems is walking around giving high fives and you are quietly crying on the sidelines.  My heart broke today.  I attended my daughters “Track & Field Day” at her school for a few hours and watched this little “ribbon-less” girl crying because she didn’t have any ribbons on her shirt.

I hadn’t planned on attending but driving home from an early morning seminar at the local library I felt the tug of my car to go “surprise my girl and give her a few cheers”.  I felt I had done my (mommy) duty, as I had volunteered earlier in the week for her school trip.  A mothers job is never done!

The day was held at Marden Park, a local indoor arena.   Just a short bus drive from the school.  My Meaghan had been talking about this for the last week.   She said she wasn’t sure if she wanted to run the 400m or not?  I said go for it girl!  She did it and I think she got a 6th place ribbon. I didn’t get to see her run but I was so proud of her, as I knew from her talks she was a little nervous.

I was lucky to watch her perform her last 2 events.  I watched her do the long jump.  She has long legs and is very tall so I thought – Ok good she will do well!  She placed “3rd”,  my Meg’s said “It was her Best Ribbon of the Day!”

I was cheering and clapping for all the little girls in her class – everyone was so happy. I was so proud of them all! One little girl didn’t receive any ribbons and my heart just melted. She didn’t seem too bothered by it, however there was another girl (I think she was a year or 2 younger than my Meg’s quietly crying because she didn’t have any ribbons.  I was so upset I asked the lady handing out the ribbons if she could have a ribbon.  She said everyone gets a ribbon, she said she would talk to the teacher in charge.    I just thought “oh please” just give her a ribbon now.   Everyone kept saying she would receive a colourful “participation Ribbon” tomorrow.  I thought she needs a ribbon now!  Why would they wait until tomorrow.  Having picked up my daughter from school that same day,  I asked the administrator when the kids who didn’t win ribbons would receive their ribbon.  There was a teacher standing there and she said she was happier and she got a ribbon.

Replaying the scenario in my mind, I wondered what I as a parent could have done?  What would I want done if it were my child?  After all I did know both of the children’s mothers.    I felt totally at a loss as I didn’t know what to do.  I mentioned it to a few teachers and they made there comments and I suggested to my daughter and her 2 friends that they offer her a ribbon.  I think they would have but their next event came up as I was talking to them and then they got all excited and ran to it, while this little girl was left weeping on the sidelines.

Why does life have to be so hard at times?  Especially when they are so young and  innocent.  You just want to shelter your kids from all the hurts, sorrows and pains you know they will encounter.  I know “Track & Field Day” is supposed to teach kids about sportsmanship, working, winning & loosing.  But why not give everyone a ribbon.  How about offering those other 3 ribbons (at the event).  Talking with a friend today, (a former teacher) she suggested offering all of the kids a ribbon before they start the day with a little talk about what the ribbons represent and about winning and loosing.   How about offering those other 3 ribbons (at the event)?  Who knows maybe those 2 little girls who didn’t receive those ribbons today will turn into competitive athletes someday?

I guess one of my lessons I want to teach my children is it is not whether you win or lose, it is how you play the game!

HONOURABLE MENTION –  PARTICIPANT – PERSONAL BEST

My best part of the day was when she got home from school she quietly said to me

“Mom I am really glad you came today!”

Waiting for Maple Syrup

April 5, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

Maple Syrup

They call it Liquid Gold” April is the month to celebrate everything Maple Syrup.   April 5th, 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Local Elmira Syrup Festival, and yes it is snowing!  In 2000 it set the Guiness World Records for the Largest 1 Day Maple Syrup Festival in the World, with 66, 529 people attending.

I remember going to the Festival with my Grandmother and brother on several occasions when we were young.  Oh those pancakes…… slathered with the rich tasty Ontario maple syrup.  Memories of walking along the closed off streets and sitting in the sunshine with thousands of people eating lots and lots of pancakes with maple syrup, butter and whipped cream.  Often it would be one of the first nice sunny days of the spring.

Or it would be like today,  “old man winter” still showing his face with the wind howling and huddling in a tent shivering eating the pancakes you waited an hour for in line.  I remember another time going to Elmira with my crazy neighbours, Patrick & Kevin with “My Matt” (pre-kiddlets days) .  Lots of giggling while we drove in the snow storm to eat pancakes with those big crowds.

Yesterday I was lunching with my friend Wes and casually mentioned I had been to a Maple Syrup Bush this week, with my daughter’s class.  I shared with him I had always wanted to ‘tap my own trees”.  Phone in hand, he quickly dialed the nearest Maple Syrup Making Town hardware store in St. Jacob’s.  Yes they had some supplies available.  It would only take 10 minutes from Waterloo, I was in luck!

I was told by the “sugar shack man” on the class trip the weather had delayed the season and they had just began to make the sryup.  He had only made the first batch that day.  I was confident there was still hope to tap some trees and hang buckets, perfect weather with cold nights and sunny days.

I always seem to do things last minute.  I guess I am not much of a planner.  However having purchased them I thought to myself “well I will have them for next year, and I will get a head start next year!  I had my eye on those glass leaf shaped bottles.  I was already designing my signature label for the bottles.  After all I was in the label business and they would make a lovely gift!

Here are my sugar bush tips from my class visit.  Sap runs from Sugar, Red, Silver Maple Trees (and maybe some other ones),  but not Pine trees.  I joked with my friend that we have a lot of Pine’s in the back.   He kind of stared at me, and said “you know you cannot tap Pine Trees?”  Depending on the diameter of the tree you can hang, 1, 2, 3 or more buckets.  It is best to check and collect buckets daily.   This Mom knows this fact from her rope game the kids played with the trees this past week.

Speaking of Mom’s I spoke with my Mother today and was all excited to tell her I had a pail for my Dad to put on their Maple.  She quickly responded “Not on my Tree!”.  Need I say more.  Maybe she will warm up to the fact when she sees the bucket.  After all shouldn’t everyone put tapping a maple tree on their “Bucket List”.

Sryup is made from boiling off the water and it turns to sugar.  My friend suggested I not boil my syrup in the house , he shared his childhood memories of the wall paper peeling off the walls from all the steam.  The house lingering with a sugar smell and messy syrup everywhere.  Ok, I would boil my syrup outside on the barbeque burner.  I already had a vision of the kids playing nicely, the sun shining and getting ready to treat the kids to the maple taffy on the snow (just like at the maple sugar bush this week.) Oh what a Mom I am, creating all these great memories, what are they going to think.  Definitely it will be a photo opportunity.

Ok so I purchased the supplies, listened to my friends tips, read some more literature and listened to my husband’s manly advice of his video watching in the morning.  I had a good idea what I was doing, since I saw “first hand” their demonstration in the cold, wet muddy bush.   Bundled up I took my buckets, drill, spiles, hammer, and lids out the trees, waving goodbye to my proud daughter Meaghan giving me a “thumbs up”, and a big smile saying she would see the syrup when she got home later.  Dad was taking them to the movies today and out for the day.

Drill….drill…..drill… yep ok I remembered to put the drill on an upward motion – done.  MMM… the video said syrup would flow.  Nothing, no “liquid gold” flowing.  I tapped some more trees, same thing no liquid.   I decided to attach the spiles and the buckets (easy peazy) and play the wait and see game.  “Maple trees why are you not flowing with your liquid gold?” Did I miss a step?  Where they Maple trees.  We live in a farm community and I am a “wanna be kinda of farmer”.  Every year I try to grow pumpkins and well, that is another story.  I am just waiting for my neighbours to drive by and shake their heads at us again.

Since I am cold and kind of cranky with not seeing instant results I going to take advantage of this quiet time in the house, make a couple pancakes and you guessed it,  put on some of the maple syrup I purchased this week.   Perhaps a coffee would be the perfect compliment to my brunch.

Enjoy the Day!   If you are not sure about doing something new, “Just DO IT!”, (like the Nike Ad).    I am looking at my buckets and they look rather festive and who knows it might take a few minutes (or hours, days) to get things flowing!   I will keep you updated.

(My New Update)  – Just found 1/4 full of sap in my bucket! (WOOT – WOOT) ….. Thanks Wes for having faith in me, and telling me to “check the buckets today – you will have some”.  He said it was too cold for it to flow yesterday and I will have some today at 1 or 2 in afternoon!  Now What is a girl to do with the sap?  That is another story.

REMEMBER JUST GO WITH THE FLOW!
