Welcome to LABEL ME MOMMY!

April 3, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

thCAB1L0KK

Welcome to the New Home of “Label Me Mommy” BLOG.    I came up with the name for my new idea, on yet another late night.  This time I was hanging out with my 3 year old son Noah – who apparently had too much coffee!  I thanked him the next day for keeping me up so late, as my creative juices were flowing.  Most people would be sleeping at 3:00 am, not us we watched a little tree house. Toopie & Binoo, and Bob the Builder were having a marathon kind of night it seemed.

I had been struggling with naming my new Blog.  My marketing friend suggested something edgy.  I came up with a few names, not edgy but something else.  I will call them “over-the-edge”.  That is how I was feeling the night I came up with “label me mommy”.  My son who is about 3 feet tall likes to roam into our room late at night once or twice a night just to see if I am sleeping.  He says “Mumma”!  I wonder why he never seems to go to Dad side of the bed.  How is that Dad never seems to hear him come in.  He always seems astonished when I tell him “Yes I was up with Noah again last night”.  Oh my little man, I don’t think he let me sleep a wink that first year we were together, so this is really easy peazy.  Except for the occasional nights were he seems to think we should be “night-owls”.

What does a good Mumma do, gets up with the kiddo offer a drink and a pee and back to bed.  A little lie down, Mumma, and then he usually just nods off.  Not this night he was up probably 4 or 5 times, so I decided “OK Mister, that’s it – we are staying up until you are really ready to go to bed!”  I was using that “tough love” stuff on him.  Flipping thru the late night TV. , Tree-house looked better than the late night shopping channel or the 1-800-call-me ladies ready to chat with you now.

A few more hundred, (or so it seemed), jingles went thru my head again.  Ok I do labels…. so I thought maybe I should have a label in the title?  I am a Mom, Mommy, Mumma, …. it goes on & on.  “Label Me Mommy” was born.  I emailed my “marketing (neighbour) – aka “our code name for each other”, and she liked it, ok she loved it!  This just goes to show me that you just might find what you are looking for when you least expect it, or at least this is my experience.  Sometimes I find when I try too hard and hold the reigns really tight it doesn’t always flow.  Maybe I should try that more often?

I hope you will drop in from time to time and like to join us on our adventures along the highway of “Mommyhood”.

Ok nuff said, I am going to bed now, and hoping the little man will not wake up his “Mumma tonight!”  Sweet Dreams!

Inspiring Change ~ Women’s DAY

March 7, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

International Women's Day

“I am women – Hear my ROAR!” I love that my Birthday happens to fall on INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY! This is cause for celebration in my books. This March 8th – 2014, the theme from the United Nations, is “INSPIRING CHANGE – FOR THE GREATER AWARENESS FOR WOMEN!”

The 100th year  Women’s Day Anniversary was celebrated in 2011.  This special day on our calendar stands for inspiring women worldwide. We as mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and daughters must stand tall and unite. There is strength in numbers. Speaking of numbers, there are millions and millions of women of every age, ethnicity and colour in the world.  On this day we stand united and we are one!

Sadly many of the women, girls, and children are not considered equal and face many sad atrocities today. I wish the world was not like this,  it makes my heart bleed. My role as a mother is to build a foundation in my daughter and son which is strong and will not shatter upon adversity. My hope is they will go into the world and be the “best they can be, be strong, be loving and kind”. I am sure this is the hope of all mothers and fathers for their children.

The first ever celebration of women internationally began in 1911 and every year marks many events and celebrations worldwide! So what are you doing today to inspire change. I am eating chocolate cake and squeezing my babies and letting to let them know I LOVE THEM!

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Can you imagine what the “OLDEST PERSON IN THE WORLD, according to the Guiness Book of World Records, has seen in her lifetime.  Misao Okawa from Japan turns 116 years old today. Imagine if you had 2 children aged 94, and 95? What is her secret you and countless others are asking?

“SLEEP and EAT and you will life a long life”. She always says “You have to learn to relax!”

I really cannot add much to this as I haven’t mastered these simple good living tips. My Birthday is this week and I have been feeling a little reflective and emotional, turning 29 again. MMM… I think I will try, I say try to work on her simple, but sometimes hard to incorporate practices. I did make time this morning to have a lovely little power walk and tried to eat well (except for those 5 little chocolate pieces). Well they were little so they couldn’t have had that many calories.

When I read this article yesterday, I quickly phoned my 95-year-old Grandmother, she will have another birthday in a few months time.  She was sleeping when I called and I had woke her up.  My father (her 70-year-old son), always reminds her “you have earned the right to sleep” when she says “she sleeps too much.”  She was happy I had woke her up as it was time for her to eat lunch, (she likes her food!)

I guess she is doing something right too! She sleeps most of the day, eats well (she doesn’t like to eat chocolate now because it bothers her stomach).  She is and was always very health conscious.

She laughed and laughed when I told her the secrets to this women’s long life and she told me “she needed to hear that!”. I mentioned another secret the oldest women in the world said.  My Grandmother was very quiet and giddy almost to hear this tip. “She eats sushi once a month” I said.   I told my Grandmother I would bring her some sushi out next week when I go visit her. She quickly said “well I don’t like that one with the…. you know”. I said I know Grandma the “raw fish”.  She said the Japanese women probably eats the raw fish one and that keeps her young.   I said I am sure the vegetable one has the same benefits. “OK” said my Grandma, she would try it!”

Remember those simple golden rules for a long life!

SOCHI MOM’s

February 3, 2014 by nancy Leave a Comment

Sochi Moms

My little 3 year old son Noah and I go skating every Monday.  I am trying to teach him how to skate.  Like usual we are late again, but it is a drop in skate so no one really knows you’re late.  Except for the man who works at the rink who quickly came in to the dressing room announcing their would be “senior skating” at noon and we had only a few minutes left.  “But you could stay longer if no one showed up”, he let us know.    I told him we usually only last 5 or 10 minutes.

When we first started skating he wore his sisters Pink Barbie helmet and Barbie knee pads.  There were a few stares and comments from other Mom’s cruising the rink.  One Mom giggled, “Oh he must have a big sister?”  We wore the helmet for the first month and then a friend from Yoga offered her helmet as her son didn’t need it anymore.  She said she would bring it next week.  So cool, he was going to look like a boy skater, or should I say “hockey player”.  His Grandma got him a yellow hockey stick last year for his Birthday and I bought him some manly knee/shin pads.  We are borrowing someones puck, but I keep putting a note to myself “buy puck”.  Ok I guess this suggests I am a “newbie sport Mom”.

My heart swelled this morning when I walked in and had a bag with skates, hockey stick and helmet in hand.  My thoughts drifted to the Mom’s of the Winter Olympians.  How must their hearts feel this month with the start of the games.  I just cannot imagine the blood, sweat and tears that go into the molding of an Olympian athlete.

We laced up after about 5 minutes of  hide and seek.  As you know it is tough to get a little person dressed for the ice.   So finally we made it, we were gliding on the ice, he was scoring goals.  Ok well not really.  He was on his skates but I was holding him up with one of those “skate kid holder uppers”.  We skated around pushing his puck, no one else was on the rink and we had an awesome time.  He kept saying “faster Mommy, faster Mommy!”

I thought of that Sochi “Thank You Mom” Ad commercial, Proctor and Gamble is currently running.  It shows the athletes beginnings of walking, skating, skiing, playing hockey, snowboarding as young toddlers.  We watch them grow, with many scenes of  falling on the ice or snow even breaking bones,  but they are determined.  We watch as they grow older and are perfecting their craft.  The music is playing the tears are falling.  My heartstrings are being pulled, (advertising at its best).  Next week we will show up earlier, and as they say “practice makes perfect”.

“THANK YOU MOM –  FOR TEACHING US FALLING ONLY MAKES US STRONGER!”

Gratitude & Love XOXO

GRATITUDE & LOVE XOXO

thCA6JG9L9

We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th – we celebrate LOVE.   I must admit I am not always cheery and full of love 365 days of the year.   On those days when all is not going well and I want to just pull the covers over my head and stay in bed.  I must remember to be grateful!

 Melodie Beattie wrote:

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough, and more.  It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, and confusion into clarity… It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events.  Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

This is one of the nicest thoughts on gratitude I have heard; I wanted to share it with you, as I think it is a state of being and can be achieved.  I know when the business of life gathers around us, it can certainly be hard to practice this gratitude.  But it is there for all of us to grasp and hold if we want it.

Wikipedia lists the benefits of gratitude as well:

“Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed, and more satisfied with their lives and social relationships.  A large body of recent work has suggested people who are more grateful have higher levels of well being.  Grateful people also have higher levels of control over their environments, personal growth, purpose if life and self-acceptance.

I try to keep a gratitude journal and write in it on occasion.   I hope to write in it more often, after researching all of the wonderful benefits.    Here is what my list looks like today.  I encourage you to try your own list, and reap the rewards of this simple practice in your daily living.

 Nancy’s Gratitude List

  • Meaghan & Noah (my kids)
  • My Dog, having a nice walk with the “old boy”
  • Enjoying some “Nancy time” watching (Mad Men).
  • Reading my Book
  • My Family / Friends
  • My “Matt”
  • My Health
  • Warm Home
  • My Paperwhites
  • Feeling love for myself, and people in my life today

I think I will send my sweetie and kiddlets a gratitude list of all the things I  am grateful for.  I am going to make them big fancy red heart cards using my daughter’s construction paper and decorate it with glitter, hearts and fancy lace!  (Shhh.. it is a secret, don’t tell them).  As we celebrate the month of love one of my goals is to try and practice more gratitude in my life today.  I think it starts with self-love first and then flows into giving and receiving more love to my family and friends.  I am so grateful for all the blessings in my life today and hope you will be have a wonderful month filled with love, kindness and gratitude, (Oh…. and maybe a “Heart shaped Box of Chocolates).

What does your New Year’s Fortune say?

December 14, 2013 by nancy Leave a Comment

Fortune (For-Tune) n

1. The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; luck.
2. A person’s standing in the financial, affected by material possessions or financial wealth
3. Often fortunate, a people that is favourable or unfavourable events.
4. Fate, destiny.

I am not a huge fan of Chinese food but on occasion I do like to order a dinner for 4 or the number 604. My favourite part of the meal is opening my fortune cookie at the end. I always like to remind the person picking up the food, if it is take-out to get enough fortune cookies for everyone. I mean really who doesn’t like to indulge in this fun little game of snapping them open to reveal your destiny.

I always like to tuck my latest fortune in my wallet and carry it around.  I giggled when I saw I really did have a fortune in my wallet and was still carrying it.  It is crumbled and worn, but here is what it says. “Don’t worry about money. The best things in life are free. 16, 19, 23, 29, 34, 43 (I guess these are my lucky numbers on the bottom). Perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket with those lucky numbers. This is a good fortune to receive for a girl like me has recently begun her own business. I better go put this back in my wallet before I loose it, (it might bring me luck!).

Did I mention my little people, Meg & Noah love for me to read their fortune’s. “Mommy… mommy what does my fortune say”. I reply, “clean your room and be a good boy and girl to your Mommy”.  I tell them this even if it says, “Work will be better tomorrow, cheery smile at your coworkers goes long way!”.

As 2013 is nearing an end and we have a new year ahead of us I have been thinking on the good fortune that has bestowed me this past year.  And like my fortune stated not all monetary.  As this is a time to pause and reflect I was thinking the year ahead could be thought of as a blank canvas. What colours will you use to paint and create the life you want?  I am going to use more reds, purples and golds.  Lately I am giving the notion of “positive thinking” some more thought. I love Norman Vincent Peale’s famous quote; “You are what you think”. I have read recently in one of his books, the importance of “Believing and Creating” are paramount for success.

This is a time of year for much reflection on the things which have come an gone, and we wonder what the year ahead will bring to us. Will your year be filled with “Good Fortune”? If you think it will, so be it! I hope it will and if you need to see it in print for reassurance, why not order some Chinese food and ask for some extra fortune cookies.

My wish for this year ahead is that it will be a postive year, filled with possiblities just waiting to be created. But first we have to believe before we create. Or is it first we create and then we believe? Here is my recipe for ‘Golden Good Fortune Cookies”. Don’t worry you can make it later,  you will find the time this year.

Golden Good Fortune Cookies

1 pound of Lucky Pennies
1 1/2 cups of Friendship
2 spoons of Hope
1 cup of Fresh Abundance
3 Teaspoons of Hugs & Kisses
Pinch of Kindness

Stir the Good Fortune Batter in a big mixing bowl, remember to make a wish before you put it in the oven. Fold each piece together – leave space for good fortune. Check often to make sure it is golden brown on top – sprinkle some love on top, tuck in Good Fortune. Serve to family and friends.

At the end of the day ~ would I have been labelled a “Kind Person?”

November 10, 2013 by nancy 4 Comments

SpringPoppies1

KINDNESS: The quality or state of being warm hearted, considerate, loving and sympathatic. 1. The quality or state of being kind. 2. An instance of kind behaviour.

We all have 24 hours in our day; we choose our thoughts, our actions, our words, in that time. Some of us have more flexiblity or freedom in our days. My day goes smoother when I choose to be kinder to myself and others around me. What is kindness, is it an action, a feeling a word?

This month marked “Random Acts of Kindness Day”. What did you choose to do on that day? For me it represented much reflection on “how kind am I to others?”. Being human I am not always kind to others or myself. When I have had a bad day, and my expectations have not been met or I have had an arguement with my spouse or family member, it is difficult to act kindly. When my basic needs have not been met, when I haven’t had enough sleep or haven’t ate properly I am not “a happy camper.” I have found that I must look after myself first before I can help others around me. It is imperative for me to try and find a balance. I feel this starts with showing loving kindness to myself first.

November 11th is Remembrance Day. It is a day to reflect on the many brave men and women who have given their lives to help us have a better life. Thank you for giving me a life of freedom and choices today. I am truly grateful to live in such a wonderful Country! I reflect on what our world would be like if we could be kinder to each other, would it be different? It seems so many wars and discord in our world are a result of opposing thoughts on religion and politics. I leave you with the below quote on kindness.

“My religion is simple. My religion is kindness.”

~ Dalai Lama

Meditation on LOVINGKINDNESS:

May I be filled with lovingkindness
May I be safe from inner and outer dangers
May I be well in body and mind
May I be at ease and happy
